The term little five was brought to life after the marketing success of the big five for tourist safaris in Southern Africa. This prompted a call by nature conservationists for visitors to acknowledge the smaller — less noticed — but still enigmatic, animals of the savanna (called bushveld in South Africa).Images, links and information to the following animal cards  are provided for by www.wikipedia.org and through our own images and descriptions. 

ANTLION

#myrmeleontidae ,  There are about 2,000 species of antlion found in most parts of the world, with the greatest diversity being in warmer areas. The best known species are those in which the larvae dig pits to trap their prey, but by no means do all species do this. Antlions live in a range of usually dry habitats including open woodland floors, scrub-clad dunes, hedge bases, river banks etc.

ELEPHANT SHREW

#jumpingshrewsorsengis , Can be found in almost any type of habitat, from the Namib Desert to boulder-strewn outcrops in South Africa to thick forest. One species, the North African elephant shrew, remains in the semi-arid, mountainous country in the far northwest of Africa. The Somali elephant shrew went unobserved from 1968 to 2020 but was rediscovered by a group of scientists in Djibouti.

RHINOCEROS BEETLE

#Dynastinae ,  rhinoceros beetles are a subfamily of the scarab beetle family (Scarabaeidae). Other common names – some for particular groups of rhinoceros beetles – include Hercules beetlesunicorn beetles or horn beetles. Over 1500 species and 225 genera of rhinoceros beetles are known.

BUFFALO WEAVER

#ploceidae ,  There are two types of buffalo weavers the red-billed buffalo weaver It is found in eastern and southern Africa. Its natural habitat is the dry savanna and the The white-headed buffalo weaver or white-faced buffalo-weaver  native to East Africa. The buffalo part of their names derive from its habit of following the African buffalo, feeding on disturbed insects.

LEOPARD TORTOISE

#Stigmochelys-pardalis ,   A large and attractively marked tortoise found in the savannas of eastern and southern Africa, from Sudan to the southern Cape. This tortoise is a grazing species that favors semiarid, thorny to grassland habitats. In both very hot and very cold weather, it may dwell in abandoned fox, jackal, or aardvark holes. The leopard tortoise does not dig other than to make nests in which to lay eggs.
