SECRET 7 OF
SOUTHERN
AFRICA

The Secret Seven are all rare animals that enjoy their privacy, but what makes them unusual are their adaptive coping mechanisms for survival in the wild. Images, links and information to the following animal cards  are provided for by www.wikipedia.org and through our own images and descriptions.

SERVAL
@Africa

#Leptailurus serval ,  A wild cat native to Africa. It is rare in North Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in sub-Saharan countries, except rainforest regions. Across its range, it occurs in protected areas, and hunting it is either prohibited or regulated in range countries.

AFRICAN CIVET
@Africa

#Civettictis civetta ,   A large viverrid native to sub-Saharan Africa, where it is considered common and widely distributed in woodlands and secondary forests. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List since 2008. In some countries, it is threatened by hunting, and wild-caught individuals are kept for producing civetone for the perfume industry.

AARDVARK
@Africa

#Orycteropus afer ,   A medium-sized, burrowing, nocturnal mammal native to Africa. It is the only living species of the order Tubulidentata, although other prehistoric species and genera of Tubulidentata are known. Unlike most other insectivores, it has a long pig-like snout, which is used to sniff out food. It roams over most of the southern two-thirds of the African continent, avoiding areas that are mainly rocky.

PORCUPINE
@Africa/Southern Europe/Asia

#porcus pig ,  Porcupines are large rodents with coats of sharp spines, or quills, that protect them against predation. Porcupines have a relatively high longevity and hold the record for being the longest-living rodent, with one individual named Cooper living past 32 years.

AFRICAN WILDCAT
Africa/West/Central Asia

#Felis lybica ,  A small wildcat species native to AfricaWest and Central Asia up to Rajasthan in India and Xinjiang in China.

The IUCN Red List status Least Concern is attributed to the species Felis silvestris, which at the time of assessment also included the African wildcat as a subspecies

CAPE GENET
@South Africa

#Genetta tigrina ,  Also known as the South African large-spotted genet, is a genet species endemic to South Africa. As it is common and not threatened, it is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Like other genets, it is nocturnal and arboreal, preferring to live in the riparian zones of forests, as long as these are not marshy areas.

PANGOLIN
@Africa/Asia

# scaly anteaters ,  Pangolins have large, protective keratin scales, similar in material to fingernails and toenails, covering their skin; they are the only known mammals with this feature. They live in hollow trees or burrows, depending on the species. Pangolins are nocturnal, and their diet consists of mainly ants and termites, which they capture using their long tongues.
